Custom fields let you create and manage additional data points across your projects, tasks, clients, contacts, and deals. This makes it easier to organize, track, and report on the details that matter most to your business.
Access custom fields
You can create and manage custom fields from your company settings:
Go to Settings in your Bonsai account.
Under Company, select Custom Fields.
Types of custom fields
Custom fields are available in the following areas:
Project fields
Task fields
Client fields (limited to text only)
Contact fields
Deal fields
When adding a custom field, you can choose from these field types:
Text – add short or long text.
Number – store numeric values.
Date – select calendar dates.
URL – add website links.
Select – create dropdown options that you define (e.g., T-shirt sizing for projects: XS, S, M, L, XL; regions for contacts: Americas, EMEA, APAC; deal sources: inbound, referral, partner, etc.).
Member – assign one or more team members directly, shown with avatars. If a member is removed from your company, they’ll be automatically unassigned.
Note: Client fields currently support only the text option.
How custom fields work
You’ll see custom fields in list views and on detail pages (e.g., project detail, task detail).
Select fields help you capture consistent structured data like sizing, region, or lead source.
Member fields allow you to assign ownership roles, like project manager or project owner, to individuals or multiple teammates.
FAQs

Yes. You can update or remove any custom field from the same settings page.
What happens if I remove a member from the company?
Any member custom field assignments for that person will be automatically unassigned.
Can I filter or sort by custom fields?
Not yet, but we're working on adding filtering, sorting, and grouping by custom fields very soon.
