How to connect a payment method to import expenses

Step-by-step guide to linking your bank account or credit card to automatically import expenses in Bonsai.

Bonsai supports automatically importing expenses from bank accounts or credit cards, making it easier to track your spending. We partner with Plaid, which connects with most major financial institutions in the United States and Canada.

We have partnered with Plaid to offer bank account and credit card connections with most major financial institutions in the United States and Canada.

Connecting Your Bank Account or Credit Card

  1. Navigate to the sidebar and click More > Expenses.

  2. Click (...) and select Import Expenses from the dropdown.

  3. On the next screen, click Connect Account to begin the process.

Bonsai partners with Plaid to securely link your financial accounts. You’ll need to agree to a data-sharing agreement by clicking Continue.

  1. Search for your bank or credit card provider, select it, and enter your credentials in the pop-up.

Note: Your data is fully encrypted through Plaid; Bonsai does not have access to your login information.

Selecting the Account Type

Once your account is successfully linked, select the account type:

  • Personal

  • Business

  • Personal & Business

This helps Bonsai calculate accurate tax deductions if you are using the Bonsai Tax add-on.

Managing Your Connected Accounts

  • Your linked accounts will appear on the Import Expenses page.

  • To manually sync transactions, follow the syncing steps in Bonsai’s guide here.

  • To remove a linked account or credit card, go to Import Expenses > (...) > Delete Account.

Note: Any expenses that have already been imported into the account will remain permanently saved, even if the connected bank account is later removed or disconnected. Removing the bank connection will stop any future imports, but it will not delete or affect previously imported expense records.
