Importing data into Bonsai

Upload .csv files to import clients, tracked time, expenses and paid invoices.

Bonsai allows you to import external data using .csv files. This helps you quickly migrate or add client and financial records into your account without manual entry.

You can import the following data types:

  • Clients

  • Paid invoices

  • Time tracking entries

  • Expenses

Each data type requires a properly formatted .csv file to ensure successful upload.


Where to Import data

Steps to Access Import Tool

  1. Log into your Bonsai account.

  2. Click your profile icon (top-left corner).

  3. Go to Settings.

  4. Open the Import Data section.

You will see options to upload different data types via .csv files.

How to import your data using a .csv file

Supported Import Types

You can import:

  • Clients

  • Paid invoices

  • Time entries

  • Expenses

Import Steps

  1. Go to Import Data in Settings.

  2. Select the type of data you want to upload.

  3. Download the provided CSV template (recommended).

  4. Prepare your file using the template format.

  5. Click “Include a file attachment”.

  6. Upload your .csv file.

  7. Map your columns using the dropdown selectors.

  8. Review the data preview.

  9. Click “Import Data” to complete the process.

To ensure a successful import:

  • Match your CSV format to the provided template exactly.

  • Validate column structure before uploading.

  • Review preview before confirming import.

Incorrect formatting may result in missing or misaligned data.

What happens after upload

After uploading your CSV file:

  • You will see dropdown menus to map your file columns.

  • A preview will display how your data will appear in Bonsai.

  • You can verify correctness before final import.

Exporting data from Bonsai

In addition to importing data, Bonsai allows you to export your data from the same Import/Export settings page.

  1. Go to Settings

  2. Open Import/Export

  3. Select Export Data

  4. Choose the dataset you want to download
