How to create documents with Bonsai AI

Availability: Bonsai AI document generation is currently available only to users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

Bonsai AI helps you create document drafts from a description of your work, existing notes, or a template. You can start with a prompt, use information you've already captured, or replace existing template content with AI-generated content.

You can start a draft in two ways:

  • From new document.

  • From a note.

Create a document with Bonsai AI

Use the document builder to start a new document from a description of the work you want to deliver.

  1. Select New document.

  2. Select Create with AI.

  3. Describe the job or choose a suggested prompt.

  4. Add one or more notes for context, if needed.

  5. Select a template, if needed.

  6. Review and edit the generated outline.

  7. Generate the document.

You can combine your prompt with notes and a template. Your prompt describes the work you need, your notes provide additional context, and your template gives the document its structure.

Bonsai AI generates an outline for you to review before creating the full draft. Once the document is ready, it opens in the document editor, where you can edit it just like any other Bonsai document. The first page can take the longest to generate.

You can also combine your prompt with notes and a template. Your prompt describes what you need, while your notes provide additional context and the template gives the document its structure.

Create a document from a note

Use this option when you've already captured details about a customer, project, or piece of work in a note. Bonsai AI uses that information as context for the document draft.

  1. Open the note you want to use.

  2. Select Create in the bottom-right corner.

  3. Select Proposal.

  4. Add or edit the prompt to describe the document you need.

  5. Review and edit the generated outline.

  6. Generate the document.

The note provides context for the proposal, helping you turn information you've already captured into a draft without starting from scratch.

Note: Notes on Project Overview are read-only and don't include the Create option. Deals don't currently have a notes view.

Create a document using a template

Templates help you create documents with a predefined structure. When you use a template with Bonsai AI, you can replace its existing content with AI-generated content tailored to your work.

You can combine a template with a prompt and one or more notes to provide additional context.

  1. Select New document.

  2. Select Create with AI.

  3. Describe the work or choose a suggested prompt.

  4. Add one or more notes for context, if needed.

  5. Select the template you want to use.

  6. Generate the document.

Unlike the standard AI document creation flow, template content replacement doesn't include an outline review step. Bonsai AI replaces the existing template content with the generated content directly.

When the document is ready, review it in the editor and make any necessary changes.

Review the AI-generated outline

Bonsai AI creates an outline before generating the full document. Review the outline to check that it reflects the work you want to describe.

You can edit the outline before you generate the document. This gives you a chance to adjust the content and structure before Bonsai AI writes the full draft.

Generate and edit the document

After you review the outline, generate the document. The first page can take the longest to generate.

When the draft is ready, it opens in the document editor. You can edit it just like any other Bonsai document.

Understand AI credit usage

Bonsai AI uses a monthly credit allowance for each eligible user. Your allowance resets on your subscription billing date, and unused credits don't carry over.

  • Premium: Includes a monthly AI credit allowance.

  • Elite: Includes 25% more AI credits compared to Premium.

  • Document length: Longer documents use more credits.

  • Individual usage: Each user's credit usage is tracked separately, so one teammate's usage doesn't affect another teammate's allowance.

You'll receive a warning as you approach your credit allowance. Once you reach the limit, AI document generation stops until your allowance resets. The rest of Bonsai continues to work normally.

Manage AI access and monitor usage

Go to Settings > Bonsai AI to view your current AI credit usage and decide whether your team can access AI features.
