When you send a document, you can now set an expiration date to control how long it remains open for signature. Before the deadline, your client signs as usual.
After it, they can still open and read the document, but the signing option is unavailable until you extend or remove the deadline.
Setting a deadline
To add an expiration date before sending:
Open the document in the builder.
Click Doc Settings and turn on Set expiration date. This setting is off by default.
Choose a preset duration: 7, 14, 30, 60, or 90 days or pick a specific date. The default is 14 days. The exact expiration date displays beneath the dropdown.
Click Send. The send screen — both the Send email tab and the Send via link tab (before you click Generate link) — shows the same expiration date for confirmation.
The document expires at 11:59 PM on the selected date, in your company's time zone.
What the client sees
Before the deadline: A "Sign by {date}, 11:59 PM" bar appears at the top of the signing page.
The day before: The client receives a reminder email letting them know the document expires the next day, along with their signing link.
After the deadline: The document still opens, but signing is disabled. A bar indicates when it expired and gives the client the option to email you to request more time.
Managing an expiration date after sending
A chip in the top bar of the sent document shows the time remaining before expiration. Click it to open the Expiration section, where you can:
Add a deadline if one was not set at the time of sending.
Change the deadline: the new date is shown before you apply it.
Turn it off: you will be asked to confirm before the deadline is removed.
None of these actions re-send the document, notify the client by email, affect the recipient link, or revert the document to draft. The client keeps their existing link.
If the document has already expired, you will see an Expired status and two options:
Reopen for 7 days: extends the deadline by 7 days from today.
Choose a date: lets you pick a specific new deadline.
You will receive a notification when a document expires, and the expiration event appears in the document's activity feed.
Key notes:
Share link expiration is separate: Each share link has its own security expiration, independent of the document's signing deadline. This is not something you control from the Expiration section.
The API and MCP do not yet reflect the new Expired status or the expiration date.
