Task and subtask notifications

Learn how task notifications work across tasks and subtasks.

In Bonsai, notification settings treat “Task” as including both tasks and subtasks. This means activity such as comments, mentions, and reminders applies to both levels.

The first step is to check your notification settings and ensure they are enabled for tasks. To confirm this, navigate to My Account > Notifications and verify that the relevant notification settings are turned on as needed.

However, notifications also depend on what you are actively following.

How task and subtask notifications work

If you are following a subtask, you will receive notifications for:

  • Subtask comments

  • Subtask activity

  • Subtask mentions

If you are only following the parent task, you will:

  • Receive notifications for the parent task

  • Not receive notifications for subtasks

This is likely what’s happening when updates on subtasks are not being received.

How to fix missing subtask notifications

To ensure you receive updates from subtasks, you can:

  • Click Follow on each subtask you want updates from

  • Or ask team members to @mention you in subtask comments

How to follow a task

You can follow a task to receive updates by:

  1. Opening the Task

  2. Clicking the (…) more options menu

  3. Selecting Follow

When you start following a task

You are automatically set to “following” when:

  • You create a task

  • You are assigned to a task

  • You comment on a task

  • You click Follow on a task

  • You are @mentioned in a task comment or description

Email notifications you’ll receive

Depending on your task activity, Bonsai sends:

  • Combined email: tasks overdue today + due tomorrow

  • Daily email: tasks due tomorrow

  • Daily email: tasks overdue today
